Understanding Words Per Minute (WPM)
Words Per Minute (WPM) is the standard measure of reading or speaking speed.
Average Reading Speed: For adults, this typically falls between 200 and 250 WPM for silent reading comprehension. Technical material might be slower, while light fiction could be faster.
Average Speaking Speed: For presentations or conversational speech, the average is around 120-150 WPM. Auctioneers speak much faster, while careful annunciators might be slower.
Our tool uses these averages as defaults, but adjusting the WPM values allows for personalized and more accurate estimates based on your own speed or the target audience's pace.
The Simple Formula
The calculation is straightforward:
Total Words: First, the tool counts the words in your provided text.
Reading Time (in minutes):Time = Total Words / Reading WPM
Speaking Time (in minutes):Time = Total Words / Speaking WPM
The tool then converts these minutes into a more readable format, like "X minutes, Y seconds".
